The researchers studied the results on the health of children by sending a questionnaire to 5 years old with questions on symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis and atomic eczema. The parents who responded were invited to complete a questionnaire on food consumption and taking children to hospital for a series of tests such as pyrometer, percutaneous testing and measuring exhaled nitric oxide.
The maternal diet during pregnancy was assessed using a semi quantitative questionnaire sent by post to 32 weeks of gestation. Food groups of interest in this study were generally fruit, citrus and kiwi, apples, vegetables in general, green leafy vegetables, pure fruit juice, full grain products, fish Overall, fish oil in general, the total fat in milk products and butter versus margarine smeared.

The results showed that there was a linear association between maternal intake of total fruit, citrus / kiwi fruit, green leafy vegetables, fruit juice, full grain products, total fat dairy products and butter face smeared with margarine and respiratory outcomes and atop in children of 5 years.
There was no consistent association between intake of food groups and pyrometer, atomic sensitization, bronchodilator response or exhaled nitric oxide in children of 5 years.
The researchers found beneficial associations between maternal apple making and outcomes in childhood sibilance’s or whistles in the chest, asthma symptoms (cough, fatigue) or by the doctor confirmed asthma at the age of 5 years, with significant linear trends.
Taking maternal apple was not associated with eczema or hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and atomic sensitization in childhood.
However, we found beneficial associations between maternal fish taking in general and the doctor confirmed eczema and eczema treated at the time, and takes between maternal oily fish and allergic rhinitis as confirmed by the doctor.
The authors found a significant beneficial association between increased maternal intake of oily fish (more than one weekly serving) and having ever had symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but the association did not show a significant linear trend.
The researchers found that the maternal diet during pregnancy and the child’s diet to 5 years were correlated in a weak but significantly positive.
Concluded that their study suggests beneficial associations between maternal apple taken during pregnancy and wheeze and asthma at 5 years of age, as well as protective effects of fish consumption. In this way, in addition to supplement with vitamins D and E and zinc during pregnancy, maternal consumption of apples and fish during pregnancy may reduce the risk of children developing asthma or atomic disease.
