Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs may protect against cancer of the large intestine. In a recent article published in the journal JAMA, entitled “Prolonged use of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and risk of colon cancer, the authors evaluated the influence of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory known in the prevention of cancer of the colon and rectum women.
After analyzing the results of tracking a group of more than 83,000 women from the Nurses Health Study in U.S. over 20 years, concluded that regular use of long-term aspirin reduces the risk of colon cancer. In the same way, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs appears to have a similar effect. However, the significant benefit of aspirin is not apparent until it is used more than 10 years. The higher the dose used, the lower the risk of developing cancer, so women who took at least 14 aspirin tablets a week for at least 10 years are those that had lower risk (up to 53% less than the non-users of the drug).
Found similar results with other popular anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen, also used at high doses. The authors note the need to balance the potential benefit to the potential serious adverse effects, such as the occurrence of gastrointestinal bleeding, the use of these drugs. And noting that exemplify the use of aspirin at the highest dose, compared with people who can not take it, we could prevent 1 in 2 cases of colon and rectal cancer among 1,000 people over a period of 10 years, but would entail excessive 8 episodes of severe gastrointestinal bleeding.
Confirmed these results, we have to take aspirin even in the soup! If we protect our heart, and now our large intestine.
