Vitamins to prevent colorectal cancer in women
Vitamin B6 may play an important role in preventing colon cancer, particularly in women who consume alcohol. This is the main conclusion of a Swedish study.
In Brief
This study shows that vitamin B6 prevents colon cancer in women
We know that vitamin B6 plays a crucial role in the formation or synthesis of DNA or genetic material of humans. Alterations or aberrations in the processes involved in vitamin B6 are associated with formation of large bowel cancer. Therefore, an inadequate intake of vitamin B6 in the diet could lead to alterations in the synthesis of DNA that, theoretically, could lead to the appearance of colon cancer. Foods rich in vitamin B6 are fruits such as bananas, vegetables, potatoes, fortified cereals, legumes, fish, poultry and red meat. Moreover, many epidemiological studies have shown that adequate intake of folate, another group of vitamins may be important in preventing colon cancer, particularly among individuals who consume alcohol.
In this study, the researchers found a significant inverse dose-response relationship between dietary intake of vitamin B6 in the long term and the risk of colon cancer, ie higher doses of vitamin B6, the lower risk of developing colon cancer. This inverse association was particularly strong among women who consumed moderate amounts of alcohol or high (more than 30 g / week), ie the risk was lower (or higher benefit) in women drinkers who took plenty of vitamin B6.
According to this study, we (especially women) to take more vitamin B6 and less alcohol if they want to keep our large intestine unscathed. Again a proper diet we can avoid serious trouble.
