Milk during pregnancy is an important source of vitamin D, calcium, riboflavin (an essential vitamin), protein and energy, despite which many women choose not to take or are advised not to take for various reasons, including the prevention of allergies in their children. Limiting making milk compromises the quality of maternal diet.

In summary

This study shows that, regardless of other considerations, such as the prevention of allergies, consumption of milk and vitamin D during pregnancy is associated with weight at birth.

It has been found that restricting milk consumption is a risk factor for developing hypertension during pregnancy and low consumption of vitamin D is associated with rickets and low birth weight newborn. Inadequate consumption of riboflavin is associated with decreased weight, length and head circumference at birth of children.

The authors of this study compared the birth weight, length and head circumference of newborns whose mothers restricted their milk consumption during pregnancy with those of infants whose mothers did not limit consumption of milk in their diet.

The results showed that women who consumed less than 250 cubic centimeters (one cup) of milk per day gave birth to children who weighed less than those born to mothers who consumed more milk daily. The length and head circumference of children were similar in both groups. Women who restricted milk consumption had, in the same way, lower consumption of protein and vitamin D, not due to chance. The authors show that the consumption of milk and vitamin D were good predictors of birth weight.

Each additional cup of milk daily was associated with an increase of 41 grams in weight of the baby at birth and each additional microgram of vitamin D, with an increase in weight of 11g.

The authors conclude that consumption of milk and vitamin D during pregnancy is associated with weight at birth, regardless of other risk factors.
