In hypertensive patients, we recommend consuming abundant vegetables and fruits as part of dietary treatment, no drug. At least part of the reduction of blood pressure and decrease cardiovascular risk has been attributed to substances called polyphones (falconoid) present in these fruits and vegetables. Tea and cocoa products are rich in polyphones. However, they are not recommended in antihypertensive or cardio protective diets and although both have been associated with lower incidence of cardiovascular accidents. A recent study suggests considerable hypertensive and cardio protective effects of cocoa.
The authors of this study raised a prospective meta-analysis, ie a study of published studies on the subject, to quantitatively assess the effect of the consumption of cocoa or green or black tea on blood pressure.
This study
Suggests that consumption of cocoa favors an adequate blood pressure and that is not the case tea.
The researchers analyzed 10 major studies on the effect of cocoa products or black or green tea on blood pressure published in the last 40 years, and found that patients who consumed cocoa, mean arterial pressure, both systolic and diastolic fell 4.7 and 2.8 mm Hg, respectively, compared with patients who had not consumed. Moreover, they noted that consumption of tea had no significant effect on blood pressure.
The authors conclude that consumption of foods rich in cocoa may reduce blood pressure while the consumption of tea seems not to have the same effect.
The greedy are lucky because your blood pressure can be reduced by taking cocoa, but hey, sugar!
