Black chocolate is good for the heart
The effects of chocolate on cardiovascular health are still the subject of controversy and debate. On the one hand, chocolate may adversely affect the cardiovascular risk due to their effects on sugar, fat and body weight, but on the other hand, can potentially promote cardiovascular health through the antioxidant effects of its constituents such as flavonoids present in chocolate in the black but not white.
Is it on cardiovascular risk?
If you think you may be at risk to make our test ‘Calculate your risk of cardiovascular disease’ and get some answers
Endothelial dysfunction, ie the alteration of the innermost layer of blood vessels, and activation of platelets are key elements in the process of thrombosis of the arteries. The snuff is another cardiovascular risk factor of first order. Thus, smokers offer an ideal model to study the beneficial effects on blood vessels of antioxidants such as chocolate black.
The aim of this study (black chocolate improves endothelial and platelet function) was to investigate whether the beneficial antioxidant effect of black chocolate, rich in a substance called polyphenol, can induce an improvement of endothelial and platelet function in healthy volunteers with endothelial dysfunction known and platelet hyperreactivity.
The study involved 25 male smokers to the various tests that were conducted before and after taking 40 grams of black chocolate. The results showed that black chocolate, but not the target, produced a rapid and significant improvement (ie, not due to chance) on endothelial and platelet function in healthy smokers at 2-8 hours after ingestion.
In this way, the researchers concluded that chocolate black exerts favorable effects on endothelial function and platelet aggregation through its antioxidant effect and therefore to beneficially affect cardiovascular disease.
Chocolate sweetens our lives and now we will also unblock the arteries and protects the heart!
