Influence of diet on breast cancer
It is well known that some foods derived from plants contain anticancer substances. We also know that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables probably reduces the risk of developing breast cancer and a diet high in fat probably increases this risk. However, there is no conclusive evidence from epidemiologic studies that there is an association between a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat and preventing the progression of cancer.
In summary
This study shows that the Mediterranean diet does not influence relapse in breast cancer.
The study of life and healthy food for women was a randomized clinical trial to assess whether a dietary pattern high in fruits, vegetables and fiber and low in fat reduces the risk of recurrence and new breast cancers and all causes of death in women with breast cancer in early and treated.
The authors compared two dietary patterns: an intervention group in which women who were advised by telephone intensively to take a diet high in vegetables, fruit and fiber and low fat content and a comparison group to whose women were advised to take printed material through a diet with 5 pieces of fruit or vegetables a day.
Participated in the study of 3,000 women 18 to 70 years, previously treated for breast cancer in early stage and were followed for an average of 7 years.
The results showed that during the monitoring period 518 women developed breast cancer (256 in the intervention group and 262 in the control group) and 312 women died (155 in the intervention group and 160 in the control group).
The researchers conclude that during the 7 years of follow-up found no evidence that the first dietary pattern to prevent breast cancer recurrence or death compared with the diet of 5 pieces of fruit or vegetables a day.
Despite the results of this study, we follow a Mediterranean diet advice because we know that is good for overall health
